Marbella may be known around the world for its stunning selection of golf courses, but local tennis fans are celebrating the news that in 2018 Marbella will play host to the Davis Cup for the first time since 2009.
The tournament’s first round, which is between Spain and Great Britain, will be played at the Puente Romano Tennis Club between the 2 and 4 February next year.
This will be the third time that the tournament has been hosted in Marbella, who fought off competition from Granada as to which town would have the privilege of hosting the prestigious tournament. However the decision was made by the RFET Board of Directors at a meeting in Zaragoza that Marbella would have the honour.
The Mayor of Marbella Angeles Munoz released a statement on the Ayuntamiento de Marbella Website, thanking the citizens and institutions of Marbella for their support:
”We have a magnificent city and we have shown that we have enough experience to organise events of a scale such as the Davis Cup.” There are also reports that Marbella Council has proposed the extension of the Puente Romano grandstand for the event in order to accommodate the 9,000 fans.
